It's a professional course and NASCAR's 23rd consecutive visit to the Sonoma Valley raceway is headlining the 2011 racing season. The seven-race major event schedule, one of the most comprehensive in the country, will be highlighted by three of the top racing series in the country - the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and IZOD IndyCar® Series. More than one-half million fans pass through the gates each year. The road course features more than 160 feet of elevation change from its highest to lowest points. The highest point at Turn 3a reaches 174 feet, while the lowest point at Turn 10 is just 14 feet.

I captured this photo in the open ocean, just after he exited the San Francisco Bay. Needless to say, these were challenging shots to obtain - as my sailboat was going up and down and sideways, my subject was doing the same - and we definitely weren't in sync! Even open-ocean sailors reported the sailing conditions to be very severe that day. Articles of the race reported "Conditions were severe under the bridge, and got worse out in the ocean. It was so rough that Second Verse, a Cascade 36, was hit by a wave and knocked down until the spreaders were under water." Dave was competing against 14 boats of all types, broke his boom during the trip, and finished the race in 17 days and 3 hours. Not only did he place second in the race, he received the Single Handed Sailing Society's Belt Buckle, and the Foxxfyre Trophy for creative ingenuity under sail, because after breaking the boom in the race, he repaired it and kept on sailing! Incredible!

This was only my third time on a sailboat and I was hoping for some "calm" sailing conditions since I get queasy easily. Needless to say, these were challenging shots to obtain - as my sailboat was going up and down and sideways, my subject was doing the same - and we definitely weren't in sync! It turned out to not only be severe sailing conditions at the entrance to the bay, but also very busy..... we also saw about 4 naval ships, like the one here, on their way into the bay. Sharp-eyed viewers will notice the hiking trail out to Pt. Bonita Lighthouse in the background. This sign was a bit eye-catching because you don't often see someone begging for organic food and of course I wondered why ask for 26 cents.... why not 25 cents. I also thought of the title "Beggers Can Be Choosers", since he seemed to be so specific in his food choice. Kind of an interesting character. California never ceases to amaze me (in a good way that is). :D
